SEG Automotive Highlights PLI Scheme, EV revolution, and the Future of E-mobility

During an e-mail interaction with Nitisha from BISinfotech; Anil Kumar, Regional President and Managing Director, SEG Automotive India talks about the future of the EV and Auto industry, in light of the PLI Scheme, EV revolution, and the future of e-mobility.

SEG Automotive has been into development and production of starter motors and generators complementing e-mobility. Hence kindly elaborate on your key offerings and how you reckon the e-mobility market shaping in India?

SEG Automotive India has co-developed together with the German counterpart, efficient solutions for light electric mobility. The EM platform with a series of mid-mount machines starting with a peak output of 2kW and ranging upto 10kW, is developed to meet the needs of high performance and high speed segment. While the Hub mount platform with output ranging between 850W to 1.2kW is designed to meet the needs of low speed and city speed applications. These locally manufactured platforms are built on a modular concept, enabling easier upgradation, and offering efficient, reliable drive solutions for light electric vehicles. The platform offers benchmark efficiency throughout the operating cycle and benefits the end application with increased range, thereby further reducing the total cost of ownership.

These highly efficient platforms, combined with our locally manufactured transmission solutions, robustly built to meet the varied needs of the final application, offer a one-stop powertrain solution for light electric vehicles. The system’s high power density combined with compact packaging with great responsiveness offers a fun driving experience. The drive control system ensures functional safety according to global standards, providing safe operation at all times. Specific protection features and increased robustness enable these machines to easily withstand the tough operating conditions on Indian roads.

While electric mobility is gaining popularity and proving beneficial in the light mobility space, the internal combustion engine continues to play a significant role in passenger car applications in the years to come. For this segment, SEG Automotive’s efficient solutions like the start-stop motors, high-efficiency generators, and the 48V hybrid solutions, offer improved fuel economy and CO2 reduction.

SC60 start/stop starter motor:

Start/Stop is an important technology to make cars more environmentally friendly, offering immediate fuel efficiency increases of up to 8%. We were the first movers in India for introducing Start/Stop technology in 2008. Our new SC60 Start/Stop starter motor is developed specifically with the Indian market in mind for smaller combustion engines: it is amongst the smallest of its kind in the world and able to fit in compact cars, yet it provides up to 1.2kW starting power. Also, the S78 platform of start-stop motors offers up to 2.2kW extending the start-stop system and benefits to the higher applications.

Efficiency options for generators:

SEG Automotive offers a broad range of high-efficiency generators for any power requirements, which keep the vehicle’s electrical system stable, efficient, reduce CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption. The modular efficiency features in generators come as an easy option for enhancing the generator’s efficiency, thereby saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions.

48V Mild Hybridization:

The 2nd generation Boost Recuperation Machine (BRM) and the Electric Machine (EM1.25), which facilitates 48-volt mild hybridization, offer technology for cost-effectively hybridizing gasoline and diesel engines. The BRM enables regenerative braking, storing energy that is later converted into additional driving power, delivering extra torque during acceleration, and allows “coasting” at high speeds with the engine turned off.

How are two-wheelers and three-wheelers welcoming the EV revolution?

Looking at the TCO benefit a light electric vehicle offers to the end consumer and being environmentally friendly, we strongly believe in the growth of light electric mobility in India. As per our current estimates,  we expect at least 5-10% of two-wheelers sold in India to be electric by 2025, while the transition on the three-wheelers to be much ahead at about 15-20% of electric three-wheelers by 2025. In addition,  the recent amendment by the government of India to the FAME scheme is a welcome move. An increase in incentives for the two-wheelers will certainly help in reducing the acquisition cost and making electric two-wheelers more attractive.

Kindly highlight the future of the EV industry.

Covid-19 has disrupted the routine functioning of every sector, making the government and business to re-look into strategies for sustainable outlook. While the entire globe works towards the recovery of the economy, the focus is largely shifting towards personal hygiene, safety, sustainable cleaner, and a greener planet.

In this scenario, the sale of light electric vehicles in India, which has already proven to be a positive business case with a lower total cost of ownership, is also estimated to pick up. The consumer preference for electric vehicles will also be supported by the good air quality indexes, which most of the cities witnessed during the lockdown.

With the increased concern on personal hygiene and social distancing norms in public areas, e-commerce activities are also expected to see a further boost in the post-Covid-19 scenario, stimulating a new set of opportunities for electric vehicles.

In the first five months of 2021, the EV segment has witnessed stronger sales of light electric vehicles compared to 2020, at +60% over the previous year. While the first quarter sales without the impact of the pandemic and the lockdown are at +30%.

Boost in local manufacturing with the introduction of PLI scheme, to support low-cost manufacturing and encourage EV adoption. Your take on it?

The PLI scheme for the auto sector is a welcome move. The scheme drives investments, growth in the local manufacturing segment and creates export opportunities, supporting ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharath’ Initiatives. The scheme directed towards incentivizing new technologies should help in the introduction and fast-tracking of efficient technologies in the Indian automotive sector, finally reducing imports and vehicular emissions.

Our localisation level is above right now and we are pushing for higher numbers as we enter with the FAME-II subsidy scheme. Bottlenecks will come on the side of electronics. Apart from this, we will push localisation of the rest.

The current offerings of SEG Automotive to facilitate EV Revolution?

SEG Automotive is actively shaping the automobile industry’s journey from the combustion engine to electrification by delivering efficient solutions for CO2 reduction – regardless of the powertrain technology. The BRM in the P0 topology, enables regenerative braking, storing energy that is later converted into additional driving power, delivering extra torque during acceleration, and allows “coasting” at high speeds with the engine turned off. The EM 1.25 takes the concept of 48V to a new level. The highly efficient 25 kW e-machine can be integrated flexibly throughout the powertrain – from the gearbox (P2, P3) to the rear-axle (P4), depending on the architecture preferred by the customer, finally improving the fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions under real life conditions.

How does the PLI scheme increase the production of EVs?

The components of PLI scheme promote zero-emission technologies like EVs & FCEVs. It will support this technology space by driving investments from both OEM and component manufacturers, thereby resulting in the accelerated development of a local eco-system for manufacturing and service of EVs. This combined with increasing numbers of EVs, and FAME incentives will improve the TCO of electric vehicles for the end user.

Why are e-scooters becoming popular in India?

e-2whs, with their usage pattern overcomes range anxiety, infrastructure challenges and is already TCO positive for the end user. Together with, the increasing awareness of the end user on benefits of EV, increase in incentives for e-2wh by central and state governments, and the increasing fuel prices are all driving the end consumer to look at e-2wh as an attractive commute option.
