AMD appoints Dell’s former senior executive as vice president microservers
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has announced the appointment of a former senior executive from Dell to spearhead the chipmaker’s push into microservers and other new markets. Forrest Norrod is appointed as the new senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s enterprise and will report to Chief Executive Lisa Su.
Prior joining AMD Norrod worked as a general manager for Dell’s server business. He joined AMD as the company develops chips for new low-power servers that might challenge heavyweight Intel in cutting-edge data centers. As per the Wall Street report, the company has been expanding into new markets including low-power “microservers” and game consoles, but progress has been slower than demanded.
Su took over as CEO, replacing Rory Read earlier this month. Norrod is hired to fill Su’s previous position, which she had held temporarily since July. Su’s appointment as the CEO was followed by 7% of its workforce to reduce costs.
