The company works collaboratively with Electric Vehicle companies & users on enhancing the range, design, and safety of the Vehicles. Puneet Jain, Founder, Natural Battery Technologies during an interaction with Nitisha highlights its special offerings and future plans.  He wishes to develop proprietary chemistry shortly so the company can mass produce it and deal in contract manufacturing.

Kindly explain Natural Battery Technologies and its special offerings.

Natural Battery Technologies (NBT), at its core, has always been about innovation since its inception and has been evolving; we are developing high-performance batteries with increased safety parameters, customs energy storage systems, solar energy storage systems, BMS, and many others. Today, Natural Battery Technology is the leading manufacturer of lithium-ion-based battery products such as Lithium-Ion Batteries, Lithium-Ion Cells, LiFePO4 Cells, Battery management Systems, Solar Home Lighting systems, Battery Packs for Solar Street Light, Solar Home Lighting Systems, Energy Storage systems (UPS & Inverter) & other portable devices.

 How does the company define itself differently from other EV Companies?

The major differentiation factor is that NBT’s Li-ion batteries surpass the Lead Acid batteries across all parameters, such as high-power density, deep cycling capability, and much longer service life. Additionally, NBT provides a high range of customer-specific customizations and is 50% More Energy Efficient; has 40% Longer Run Times; is 50% Smaller Carbon Footprint; has a 45% Lower Cost than Lead Acid Batteries, and also comes with easy Plug and Play Technology

Kindly talk about the EV-catching fire situation in India and how it can be resolved.

Indeed, the unfortunate cases of recent EV vehicle-related accidents have raised concerns over the safety of batteries. However, NBT, since its inception, has dedicatedly worked towards the safety aspects of batteries. Our technologically empowered infrastructure and innovation allow us to monitor the health of a battery by considering various parameters. There is a standard for every battery’s health stats, and if any product is found lacking behind those standards, the consumer is alarmed to get the required fixations done to avoid accidents.

What is your point of view on the battery swapping policy?

Recently, the NITI Aayog held an inter-ministerial discussion to formulate a robust and comprehensive battery swapping policy framework in February 2022. Battery swapping infrastructure will allow EV owners to swap out discharged batteries for charged ones at various swapping stations. This solves the problem of installing charging stations while also reducing drivers’ concerns about the range of their EVs.

How was the business in 2020-21 and what will be your future marketing strategy?

The business in 2021-22 was in a growth phase; we have been acquiring clients to deliver our batteries and were setting up all the processes and systems in place for an efficient expansion of the business.

Now that we are in this year, we are looking at various other strategies to scale our business, implementing a robust infrastructure for the batteries pan India.

Other than that, we are also getting all our batteries compliant with changing norms on top of that we are finding various ways to encourage the faster adoption of EVs via lease/rent model so that end users can experience and observe the benefits of having one at minimal costs with minimum efforts.

Is there any New product you are planning to launch in the coming months?

NBT is actively working towards the indigenization of lithium-ion cells and the current prevalent chemistry. The company has researched new chemistries that are competitive with lithium-ion cells, which have higher safety and longer cycle life. NBT is exploring the cell-level chemistries of cell cathodes & anodes. We wish to develop proprietary chemistry shortly so we can mass produce it and deal in contract manufacturing.

What are your expectations from the Indian government for EV industry?

Considering the constraint of space in urban areas for setting up charging stations at scale, the Hon’ble Finance Minister in her Budget Speech of 2022–23 announced that the Union Government will introduce a Battery Swapping Policy and interoperability standards to improve efficiency in the EV ecosystem. It is significant for encouraging phased manufacturing programs for batteries and EV components. The initiative aims to aid in the setting up of an intricate framework of state-of-the-art battery manufacturing units all across India. To support cell manufacturing, the country needs a sufficient supply of raw materials, mainly lithium, cobalt, nickel, etc., through mining grounds within the country or its peripheral countries.
