DoT to seek TRAI’s views on 60GHz frequency

TRAI to submit recommendations on spectrum pricing to DoT

The Department of Telecom will ask TRAI about its view on freeing of 60GHz frequency. This move of DoT will enable the telecom operators to install WiFi solutions like WiFi data offloads in order to improve the broadband coverage in the country in the areas of heavy data usage.

As per the report by Times of India, DoT has proposed to make the 60GHz band available for Wi-Fi offload deployments to address the spectrum crunch in the 2.4GHz band. This band is presently used for offering Wi-Fi services. The department will also ask TRAI for its views on the same issue. This move will enable the operators to simplify WiFi offloads services.

The Wi-Fi offloads are, typically, a small-cell technology which allows mobile carriers to decrease load on their networks and in turn deliver data services effortlessly to the end-user cost-effectively by riding on a partner Wi-Fi network.
