The Department of Telecommunication has suggested a proposal to the Union Cabinet in order to create a Defence Band to enable special wireless networks for the defence services. As per the report by PTI, the establishment of a new band will enable release of around 150 MHz of spectrum by the Defence Ministry in the 1700-2000MHz band for the commercial purpose of 3G and4G services.
Presently, the Defence Ministry holds 300MHz spectrum and the it has agreed to release 150 MHz for the commercial use. With the creation of Defence Band, the Defence forces will have exclusive right on spectrum for the use of defence services. The discussion for the creation of this band is on between DoT and the Defence Ministry for a long time.
As reported by PTI, earlier this month, DoT stated in an official statement that, part of spectrum in 2100MHz band is held by Defence, and that it is in discussions to get some frequencies vacated for 3G mobile services in this band. Discussion is on with Defence. TC has decided to focus on spectrum for auction that is coming up for renewal. Earlier, the government also said, that it wants to keep 8.2MHz of spectrum as Defence Band which leaves only 104MHz spectrum available for the February auction.
