HPE Acquires Indian Flash-storage Firm “Nimble”

The latest acquisition of HPE aims new offerings with  complementary all flash array architecture

Another big-bash acquisition from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) this year, and this time it’s Indian. California Nimble storagebased HPE acquired ‘Nimble’, a company founded by Varun Mehta and Umesh Maheshwari. The company is listed on Nasdaq and builds flash-storage products, and competes the likes of NetApp and EMC.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise purchased Nimble for $1.09 billion done in all-cash. HPE is the second largest brand that provides external storage devices, and was worth $656.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016. Earlier this year, HPE also acquired hyper converged solution provider SimpliVity, Cloud Cruiser, a consumption-based infrastructure analytics and security analytics vendor Niara.

The following deal underlines foreign companies growing interest in Indian technology firms, based in India or outside. Over the past six months Apple, Nutanix, Intel and Cisco have shopped around for companies with Indian origin, especially in areas of artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and automation. Cisco recently snapped up Jyoti Bansal-founded AppDynamics, which helps companies monitor application performance, for $3.7 billion.

“Nimble builds on our strategy to make Hybrid IT simple through software defined and machine learning innovations,” Antonio Neri, executive vice-president and general manager, enterprise group, HPE, wrote in a blog post.

HPE has signalled that it needs complementary all‑flash array architecture to its 3PAR StoreServ arrays.

HPE said that this acquisition will give it a full range of flash storage systems for SMB to large enterprise clients and help it better compete in the fast-growing all-flash storage market. Mehta, who has spent over two decades in the technology industry, cofounded Nimble Storage in 2008 with Maheshwari. Maheshwari is the chief technology officer at the firm and Mehta is vice-president of product.

The company is also getting the storage industry’s leading cloud-based management and predictive analytics capability, InfoSight, and with Nimble planning a hyper-converged offering, HPE can decide whether to go ahead with that or concentrate on its still freshly new SimpliVity acquisition’s technology.
