Geospatial Sector in India- Access to Endless Possibilities

Geospatial SectorAnyone who has ever played games like GTA Vice City or any treasure-based hunting games must be quite familiar with the extreme significance of location mapping or navigational services provided by the game.

Even if you haven’t, the role of the Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot be undermined in determining various aspects and layouts of an area while comfortably sitting in an office.

The year 2020 further cemented the Role of Geospatial Analysis as the sudden outbreak of coronavirus brought together a complete lockdown crisis, and the need for preparing strategically while responding rapidly and recovering methodically was the key agenda to minimize the impact of disruptions happening all around the world.

Multiple governments and organizations that were geo-aware and knew the Role of Geospatial Analysis in the long run, were already leveraging geospatial technologies that later proved them to be more resilient than others.

Being geo-aware allowed them to mitigate, plan, and bounce back more easily to address the challenges posed by the pandemic, while for others, it took a while.

Once maps and spatial dashboards started working their magic on identifying the most possible areas of spreading the virus, the constant panic and uncertainty surrounding the mysterious and rapid rise of cases mellowed down quite a bit.

The main focus was then shifted towards addressing the challenges as well as responding to the situation on the ground, and providing relief operations.

And this was just a small use case of geospatial technologies under the vast Role of Geospatial Analysis, let’s find out a bit more about geospatial technologies and how is it changing the outlook of people at a large scale.

What’s the Hype around Geospatial Analysis?

GISIn layman terms, Geospatial analysis comprises collecting, displaying, and manipulating imagery, GPS, satellite photography and historical data, in terms of a street address, or postal code identifier as they are applied to geographic models.

The origins of geospatial analysis date back to the year 1960s in Canada for cataloging natural resources, while using geographic information systems (GIS).

Geographic information systems or GIS are mainly used to predict, manage and learn about all kinds of phenomena that affect the earth, its systems and its inhabitants.

Among the vast applications and Role of Geospatial Analysis, a few of the main ones include crisis management, climate change modeling, human population forecasting, weather monitoring and animal population management.

Role of Geospatial Analysis

GPSRole of Geospatial Analysis can be measured from the simple fact that the analysis provides a solid framework for a better world while dealing with a multitude of challenges like climate change, poverty and shortage of natural resources.

With the help of GIS, we can understand the current scenario and changes taking place in a particular area and then respond accurately while calculating the impact of those actions.

Location data also forms a necessary part of the modern digital era and is particularly important in attaining sustainable development and improvement of any country.

Role of Geospatial Analysis can be accounted with the fact that its location-based data services and GIS form an integral part of modern industry that offers location-based services to multiple sectors like e-Commerce, delivery and logistics as well as the transport sector.

Geospatial tech is also essential for more traditional and orthodox sectors of the economy including agriculture, construction and development, and for locating mines and minerals.

Geospatial Analysis in India

India has shown quite a rigid stance on regulating geospatial mapping, ground surveillance and geolocation data through strict laws over the last few years.

The Survey of India even claimed that Google Maps was not authentic in 2017 as they were not approved by the government and were deemed unfit for official use.

Though it did not affect the credibility of the tech giant or any other international enterprise working in the same sector.

Despite the country’s tight controls over who can conduct mapping exercises, and to what degree as well as which locations can be mapped in India, Role of Geospatial Analysis was not hidden to the global tech giants that dominated geospatial space for a long time.

Still, a significant shift in the attitude of the government was seen during 2019 when India spoke in World Geospatial Forum 2019 to invest in this underdeveloped field as the country gears up for a big change in the regulation sector of this sector.

And the change came to the forefront in the early months of 2021 as India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) announced the opening of access to its geospatial data and services, including maps, for all Indian entities.

This move shows the start of major changes in the country’s mapping policy under the Geospatial Information Regulation Act, 2016.

Role of Geospatial Analysis was further solidified as several homegrown companies like MapmyIndia and other solution providers started showing their potential while providing numerous services using geospatial technologies.

Startups and various businesses in India can now utilize the geospatial data sector especially e-commerce and geospatial-based apps that will in turn increase employment in these sectors.

Role of Geospatial Analysis in India will show Indian companies new possibilities in developing indigenous apps and will also increase public-private partnerships for major projects.
