Government: introduce nationwide mobile number portability by 31st March, 2015

The Indian Government is planning to introduce nationwide mobile number portability by 31st March, 2015. This policy will help the mobile subscribers to easily change their mobile operator without changing their number from anywhere in the country. The telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated in Lok Sabha that, the national MNP is likely expected to be implemented by March 31, 2015.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is of the view of levying additional entry fee, performance bank guarantee and financial bank guarantee to be charged from existing MNP service providers. Earlier the regulator has asked DoT not to impose and changes in the entry fee and bank guarantee of the companies involved in managing MNP service because of many important reasons. Presently, there are only two companies which provide this service – Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution and their licenses will expire after five years.
