The Government is seeking suggestions from the industry in order to enhance the usage of broadband capacity. Currently, the broadband capacity is not being utilised to the fullest, only 50% of the entire capacity is utilised so far. Talking about the situation, Telecom Secretary, Rakesh Garg said that, a lot of broadband infrastructure belongs to the government sector and most of it is not used yet. He also stated that hardly 50-60 percent of the total capacity is used up till now.
Speaking at an event organised by Ficci, Garg also commented that, the industry show work in this direction and should devise methods for the complete utilisation of the broadband capacity. Moreover, the government and the stakeholders should also look for the reasons behind the underused capacity. He further added that the Government is working in the direction of connecting 2.5 lakh panchayats with high speed broadband network. But along with this the stakeholders should also guarantee the availability of the new infrastructure being laid is utilised by people in the rural areas. As per the plan of the Government, within 3 years .5 lakh gram panchayat will be connected from their block headquarters with broadband which will give them speed of minimum 100Mbps.
Commenting on the same issue, Rajendra Kumar, Joint Secretary of Department of Electronics and IT (Deity) stated that, the Government is all set and is in favour of providing the entire desired infrastructure required for the task at hand. But, for some reason the desired results are not being achieved. He also added that, 222 projects are currently operational and we need to integrate more services in order to make it a success.
The Government is further planning to set up a National E-governance Academy; it will be an informative portal and will impart knowledge regarding the usage of social media platforms.
