Keeping in mind the privacy threats and in order keep the data safe and secured, the Government of India has decided to bring about 5 million officials under its private email network. The officials will now be using the private email network and will not be relying on the public email providers. After this change of email networks the officials will be in the secure and encrypted data network of the government, which will be installed by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY).
As reported by PTI, presently the project covers millions of government officials. Commenting about the same, R S Sharma, DeitY Secretary, said, “We are in the process of implementing this and we need to scale it to cover a total of 5 million employees. This process will be completed by March 2015.” The Government has assigned the sum of Rs 100 Crore for the complete project. This project will include expenses for expanding infrastructure and securing it against external attacks and security breaches.
Apart from this, the official communications of the Ministry of Defense and External Affairs will not be covered under the project. Ravi Shankar Prasad the Communication and IT minister also said that secure email system is being developed and it will see greater usage by March next year. This system will make sure that all the official communications are safe and secure.
