Green Hydrogen-Based Plastic Production

MitsubishiMasdar, Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG) and INPEX CORPORATION have announced the commercial-scale production of polypropylene made from carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen in Abu Dhabi.

The partners will look to utilise green hydrogen and CO2 to create e-methanol, which will subsequently be converted to propylene and polypropylene, a type of plastic material used in everyday items such as bottles, jars and food packaging.

Under an agreement, Masdar, MCG and INPEX will assess the techno-economic feasibility of a commercial-scale plant for the conversion of the fuels to plastic.

A report by the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) said, switching to renewable feedstocks for plastic materials, combined with the decarbonisation of the production process, “could potentially make plastic zero-carbon emission across the entire lifecycle of the product,” even if the plastic was to be incinerated.

“The chemical industry is now faced with the dual challenge of reducing its GHG emissions, while actively participating and leading the transition to a carbon neutral economy,” said Jean-Marc Gilson, CEO of MCG.

Gilson continued, “With that focus in mind, our ambition to use CO2 as a key starting raw material is a very important steppingstone towards a sustainable future and we are looking forward to using our expertise to contribute to the success of this project.”

In another agreement, Masdar and INPEX have said they will explore establishing an Abu Dhabi-based e-methane production project using green hydrogen and CO2.

The pair will carry out a feasibility study across the whole value chain, while also evaluating the commercial viability of operating a methanation business in Abu Dhabi with a view to exporting e-methane to Japan.
