Idea Cellular becomes the highest gainer under the MNP policy

The mobile number portability (MNP) facility has turned out to be a big relief to many of the mobile phone subscribers. On the other hand it has also become a blessing for some of the operators and curse for the others. The telecom minister of India Ravi Shankar shared the data relating to the MNP policy in the Lok Sabha. The data clearly highlights that, Idea cellular has become the highest gainer under the MNP policy showing the net gain of around 95 lakh customers. However, Reliance Communications has turned out to be the biggest loser because of the same service.


Prasad said in a statement that, “The reason for port out/ port in may be as…non satisfaction of the subscribers from their existing mobile operator, expectation of getting better services from recipient mobile operator.” The data is collected till June 30, 2014 and it shows that 1.51 crore mobile subscribers shifted from Idea to other telecom operators. Along with this about 2.46 crore subscribers joined the teclo’s network under MNP resulting into the benefit of the company.

The data also states that, about 1.14 crore subscribers left the network of Reliance Communications and only 79.4 lakh subscribers joined the network resulting into the loss of about 61.5 lakh customers till June 30. The data also suggests that Idea, Vodafone and Airtel have benefited from the MNP service, while other operators faced losses. Talking about the losses, then Vodafone lost the maximum over 1.96 crore customers through the MNP and gained 2.71 crore subscribers and came second after Idea with the net gain of 74.65 lakh customers. Airtel’s net gain sums up around 36.35 lakh users.

Apart from this, BSNL and MTNL faced the loss of 15.54 lakh and 2.13 lakh customers respectively. Joining the similar bandwagon is Aircel with the loss of 23.16 lakh customers accompanied by Videocon at 4.48 lakh and MTS at 3.82 lakh customers. Moreover, Tata Teleservices and Uninor faced the loss of 45.45 lakh and 33 lakh customers respectively. The data shared also highlights that about 91 crore mobile phone subscribers used the MNP facility.
