Indian languages to get specific domain names

After the successful launch of the .Bharat domain name it now time for the roll out of the domain names in Indian languages. As reported by the Hindu Businessline Govind, CEO, NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) and Chairman of .IN registry has revealed this move at the World Domain Day 2014. He further added that, the domain names, which end with .Bharat in Devanagri script, will now cover seven Indian languages namely, Boro, Hindi, Dogri, Konkani, Maithalai, Marathi, Nepali and Sindhi starting on 27 August, 2014.

Moreover, this language support will further include the support for other Indian languages like Bengali, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu, Tamil and Punjabi and many others. He also highlighted that, the National Internet Exchange of India is working hard to encourage and promote the use of internet in the rural and remote areas of the country. He also said that, internet governance is becoming a rage and we need to have a multi-stake holder approach for issues pertaining to public policy and critical Internet resources.

This policy of the government has received varied reactions from different sectors. There are some people who have welcomed the initiative of the government whereas, there are others who feel low internet penetration and low literacy rate will prove to be a setback for this.
