Kerala Attracts Proposals for Green Hydrogen & Ammonia Production
Kerala has unveiled a draft plan to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen and ammonia by 2040. The state aims to achieve 100% green hydrogen and ammonia consumption by the same year.
Kerala targets a 30% green hydrogen blend in total hydrogen consumption by chemical, fertilizer, and refinery units by 2027. The state will establish centers of excellence to accelerate research and development in this field. Additionally, Kerala plans to forge global partnerships for green hydrogen exports.
With an emphasis on cost reduction, the state aims to initially lower the cost of green hydrogen generation to below $2/kg and eventually bring it down to less than $1/kg in the long run.
This initiative aligns with Kerala’s broader goal of transforming into a 100% renewable energy-based state by 2040 and achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050. The move follows the Department of Science and Technology’s call for proposals to establish hydrogen valley platforms nationwide. The project will be implemented in three phases, aiming to mature green hydrogen technologies by 2050.
