LS Electric Acquires IEC 62443-4-1 Information Security Certification

LS-ElectricLS ELECTRIC has acquired the IEC 62443-4-1 information security certification for developing industrial automated processes of PLC, inverter, etc., from TUV SUD.

IEC 62443 is a new international standard that defines a holistic approach to security for mitigating risks in industrial communications networks. Alternatively, existing IT cybersecurity standards had limitations in implementing a security system in industrial automation and control systems (IACS) or operational technology (OT), which have recently been attracting attention since they are limited to networks.

In particular, IEC 62443-4-1, acquired by LS ELECTRIC, describes and defines the requirements for security for manufacturers’ development processes.

The standard requires matters related to security functions and expertise, components security,  process and quality assurance, security architecture and design, problem handling, and security updates, patches and changes.

LS ELECTRIC’s strategy is to accelerate the supply of automation solutions for data centers, smart factories, large buildings, and railways requiring the highest security solutions through this certification.

With industrial automation solutions being networked, and hardware and software used in automation and control systems being standardized for distribution, potential cyber threats and risks have increased, making products certified by international security standards even more essential for security reinforcement.

CTO (Chief Technology Officer/ Managing Director) Seo Jang-cheol at LS ELECTRIC, explained, “As the scope of security has expanded from the network to the plant level, it is meaningful to be the first in Korea to receive security certification as the No. 1 automation company in Korea. We will strengthen our market dominance by expanding the development of security certification application solutions to the field.”

TUV SUD Korea’s CEO Seo Jung-wook said, “We are very pleased to award the first-ever IEC 62443 certification for Korea when cybersecurity concerns are increasing. We will work with LS ELECTRIC to revitalize the field of industrial security based on our extensive certification experience, technical expertise, and global network in cybersecurity.”

Meanwhile, LS ELECTRIC signed a business agreement with TUV SUD and plans to cooperate in services related to electrical safety, functional safety,  cyber security, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), software quality assurance, and free open-source software.
