Stelco, Primobius to Commercialize EV Battery Recycling Tech

Primobius GmbH is a 50:50 joint-venture of leading steelmaking equipment manufacturer SMS group GmbH and Neometals Ltd, an Australian specialty metals company.

Stelco Holdings Inc. has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Primobius GmbH to commercialize advanced electric vehicle battery recycling and processing technologies in North America.

Stelco Primobius EV Battery RecyclingWith the help of the technologically advanced integrated steelmaking facilities, the steelmaker will create a closed-loop system of auto recycling and provision of green steel and battery metals back to its automotive OEM customers, the company said.

Announcing the licensing and option agreements, Primobius will issue a license to Stelco and will hold an option to acquire 25%–50% of the venture. As per the company statement, the initial operations are targeted for 2023.

According to a media release, the partnership will enable the independent steelmaker to secure end-of-life electric vehicles to source scrap steel feedstocks and recycle lithium-ion batteries in a proposed 20,000-net ton per annum integrated operation at Lake Erie Works.

The plant will produce annually up to 18,400 net tonne of nickel, manganese and cobalt sulphates, lithium hydroxide and carbonate, and up to 40,000 net tonne of steel scrap. Moreover, internally generated scrap will meet over 25% of Stelco’s steel scrap requirements with the opportunity to build additional processing facilities across North America.

Alan Kestenbaum, Stelco Executive Chairman and CEO said, “Stelco is thrilled to partner with Primobius. By providing this service, Stelco will be able to recycle end-of-life electric vehicles, convert them into green steel and recover from their batteries high purity metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese.

The synergies obtained by joining the leading engineering company in the world with the leading battery metals technology company and with our state-of-the-art steelmaking capabilities position Stelco as the best-in-class partner to automotive OEMs, particularly those pursuing electric vehicle strategies.”

Primobius GmbH is a 50:50 joint-venture of leading steelmaking equipment manufacturer SMS group GmbH and Neometals Ltd, an Australian specialty metals company.

This partnership will come as an aid to the automotive industry that needs improved technology and supply chain innovations to better manage battery manufacturing waste and end-of-life batteries and to meet the rapidly growing demand for critical and scarce battery-grade raw materials through a closed-loop solution.

Investment of Euro 10 million (INR 84.5 crore) was made to get access to advanced battery tech for EVs, and the European EV ecosystem.
