‘Telangana’: The Hotspot of Aerospace and Defence

Telangana state has become center point for all defence industries around the world, as it is achieving new establishments continuously.

DRDO labs and defence PSU establishments besides over 25 large private companies and over 1,000 MSMEs are few achievements of Hyderabad. This state is playing prime role for delivering the Atma Nirbhar goals.

Minister of IT-Telangana, K.T. Rama Rao told to a newspaper that the city is the largest and most strategic location for defence establishments. There are several states in India that have the capability of manufacturing defence products; Telangana is the fastest growing state amongst them,” he said.

Telangana has emerged as the most vibrant aerospace and defence ecosystem in India. Hyderabad has been a strong defence manufacturing hub with over a dozen major DRDO labs and defence PSU establishments besides over 25 large private companies and over 1,000 MSMEs. With the major drive on indigenisation announced by Government of India, Hyderabad is geared up to be a prime driver for delivering the Atma Nirbhar goals, point out experts.

The State has attracted large investments from global OEMs such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and GE Aviation. Among strategic Indian players, TATA group currently runs over 90 per cent of its aerospace manufacturing from Hyderabad. Adani Group and Kalyani Group also established various projects.

The State has five dedicated aerospace parks in Hyderabad and 50 general engineering parks. Telangana is creating two more aerospace and defence parks to meet the increasing demand. A dedicated Composite Park has also been created by TSIIC where over 50 composite manufacturing units are coming up.

Several new institutions are coming up in the State. Airports Authority of India is setting up a civil aviation research organisation in Hyderabad with an investment of Rs 250 crore at Begumpet airport. ISB is setting up a centre of excellence (CoE) in civil aviation. The Aeronautical Society of India is setting up Dr Abdul Kalam CoE in aerospace& defence. Land is being allocated for this centre. The State government is also setting up an Aerospace University, Praveen P A, Director, Aerospace & Defence, Government of Telangana, has recently said during a virtual summit,
