As reported earlier, the Department of Telecommunication has suggested to the Union Cabinet to create a Defence Band to enable special wireless networks for the defence services. It seems that the government has agreed to the proposal put forward by DoT. The armed forces have decided to free up the productive spectrum including 3G for the commercial use. The telecom minister Ravi Shnakar Prasad held a meeting with his defence counterpart Manohar Parrikar regarding the same issue.
As reported by the Times of India, Prasad stated, “We both agreed that while the defence needs spectrum, the growth of the telecom sector and its infrastructure is equally important. We have to work in concert, coordination and synergy.
However, he did not clarified that when will the defence ministry vacate the spectrum.
