Honeywell has recently announced to manufacture Solstice range of hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) in India. This portfolio of next-generation products has no ozone depletion potential and a global warming potential (GWP) of 1, thereby helping customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end product performance. These industry-first products have various applications, including blowing agents for foam insulation and refrigeration liquid for chillers. Globally, Honeywell’s Solstice range of LGWP refrigerants has had the same impact as planting more than 77 billion trees or the equivalent of removing more than 42 million cars from the road each year. How is Solstice® contributing towards lower-global warming potential (GWP)?

Honeywell has invested a billion dollars in research, development, and new capacity for Solstice® technology, having anticipated the need for lower-global warming potential (GWP) solutions to combat climate change more than a decade ago.
The Solstice® portfolio of products benefits society through superior energy efficiency performance in cooling and insulating applications. By reducing fuel consumption, fluorocarbons directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heating, cooling, and electrical power generation, and are cost-effective for the end user compared with fluorocarbon alternatives.
Using Honeywell Solstice technology has helped avoid the potential release of the equivalent of more than 295 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere so far, equal to the carbon emissions from nearly 688 million barrels of oil. By the end of 2022, Solstice R-1234yf, a low global warming potential refrigerant used in automobile air conditioning systems, will be used in almost 185 million vehicles globally.

Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) have an ultra-low GWP and are non-ozone depleting. Our portfolio of ready-now, energy-efficient products with HFO technology include:
- Solstice® yf,an ultra-low GWP refrigerant for automobile air conditioning systems that is expected to be used in 185 million vehicles globally by the end of this year.
- Solstice® N40 is the world’s most adopted, lowest-GWP replacement refrigerant for 404A in the supermarket industry, with more than 60,000 installations in supermarkets across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
- Solstice® Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA) is an ultra-low GWP solution used in a variety of rigid foam insulation applications, including residential and commercial refrigeration equipment, spray foam, pour-in-place insulation, and insulated metal panels.
- Solstice® Gas Blowing Agent (GBA) is a gaseous blowing agent that is being used in extruded polystyrene board and one-component foam applications.
- Solstice® Propellant is a non-flammable, ultra-low GWP-solution for aerosol applications, including personal care products, pressure dusters, lubricants and cleaners, and disinfectants.
- Solstice® ze, an energy-efficient, ultra-low GWP refrigerant, has been adopted by heat pump manufacturers to deliver low-carbon and energy cost savings in ground-breaking projects throughout Europe.
- Solstice® zd has various applications, including blowing agents for foam insulation and refrigeration liquid for chillers.

Honeywell has recently begun production of near-zero global warming-potential medical propellant. Kindly highlight its specialty and what will be next step in the same direction.
We recently began production of Solstice® Air (HFO-1234ze(E) cGMP), a near-zero GWP medical-grade propellant for use in respiratory inhalers. Honeywell’s Solstice Air technology is being evaluated for use as a medical propellant and has up to 99.9% less GWP than propellants currently used in inhaled respiratory medicines. It is a non-flammable, near-zero GWP, non-ozone-depleting, volatile organic compound (VOC)-exempt (per U.S. EPA and CARB) propellant in clinical development today for pressurized metered-dose inhalers.
