The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has stated that, around 10 lakh complaints were reported up till September against the various telecom operators for activating VAS services without taking prior permission from the users. The total number of complaints registered from 1 January to 30 September accounts to 10, 37, 596 as per the data released by the regulator.
TRAI also stated that maximum number of complaints was registered in the month of August and least was accounted in January. However, the regulator has not revealed the name of the telcos against whom maximum number of complaints is being made by the subscribers. The total number of VAS activations during the period of nine months stand at 56.88 crore whereas the deactivations account to 9.35 crore.
As per the PTI report, the regulator also stated that it has taken various measures to protect the interest of the consumers from time to time. TRAI has also issued various directions which prohibit activation of value added services without the explicit consent of the consumers and also prescribed the manner in which the explicit consent is to be obtained. Moreover, the regulator has also mentioned that the users can now deactivate VAS through a common toll-free number (155223) accessible through SMS or call across all operators.
