TRAI Squares Net Neutrality – Industry Didn’t Get Back to React

TRAI Squares Net

An expert team of Indian telecom penal from the TRAI has scraped all the cynical words going around with ‘Net Neutrality’ ordering immediate ban on any differential pricing for data, aiding millions of netizens with impartial internet access.

Moreover, the statement desks that social giant Facebook’s free internet scheme and and Airtel Zero platform by Airtel in their proposed scheme has to be junked.

Extolling the moment The Tech Industry and related associations didn’t stand back to opine on this ‘Judgement Day’. Here is how they reacted.

NASSCOM welcomes the TRAI announcement on differential pricing mandating that discriminatory tariffs are not allowed, and that TSPs or TSPs and their partners cannot offer discriminatory tariffs for data services being offered or charged by the service provider. In line with NASSCOM’s recommendation, TRAI has retained the provision to allow for reduced tariffs for public emergency. With an increasingly digitally connected population, it is important to leverage this medium in extreme situations where there is need for rescue, support and critical information. We are grateful to the regulator for adopting a balanced approach, and their reposing faith in stakeholder consultations.

Citing to the judgement, R. Chandrashekhar, President, NASSCOM said, “Our submission highlighted the importance of net neutrality principles, non-discriminatory access and transparent business models aligned to the goal of enhancing internet penetration in the country. The TRAI announcement resounds with the submission made by NASSCOM and we would like to congratulate TRAI for enshrining the principles of net neutrality”.

Sanjeev Bhikchandani, Chairman, Internet Council said, “this announcement will help address apprehensions for young start-ups on lack of a level playing field. NASSCOM will continue to work with all stakeholders for a conducive regulatory environment that supports the growth of India’s start-up ecosystem”.

Arpita Pal Agrawal, Leader – Telecom, PwC India said, “With this notification TRAI has decided that all citizens of India will get the same view of the internet which is in line with the principle of non – discriminatory access. What remains to be done is to find innovative ways to actually get all citizens access to this internet as India’s ranking in universal broadband access is abysmally poor and the digital divide continues to widen.”

Rajan Mathews, Director General, COAI said, “The telecom industry is disappointed with TRAI’s decision to rule out differential pricing. COAI had approached the regulator with the reasons to allow price differentiation as the move would have taken us closer to connecting the one billion unconnected citizens of India. By opting to turn away from this opportunity, TRAI has ignored all the benefits of price differentiation that we had submitted as a part of the industry’s response to its consulting paper, including improving economic efficiency, increase in broadband penetration, reduction in customer costs and provision of essential services among other things. In our opinion, TRAI’s regulation on prohibiting differential pricing constitutes a welfare-reducing measure of high concern by blocking a possible avenue for our less-advantaged citizens to move to increased economic growth and prosperity by harnessing the power of the Internet. We believe that this measure will have an impact on the Government’s ambitious Digital India initiative.”

To conclude my opinion, I would prefer Facebook and other Service providers to abide with the Digital India and associated initiative and extend prudent services to the major part of rural India. At last, the government has engendered every innovation to reach the corners of our country and it better commissions the drafts.
