TRAI to organise seminar on OTT services
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is planning to hold a seminar in order to understand the entire eco-system along with the impacts of Over-The-Top (OTT) services. These applications are used to share and transfer audio, video and text files using the internet. The seminar is scheduled for 5 August, 2014.
The OTT services include Viber, WhatsApp, Line, Skype many others which enable the users to chat, make free calls, share videos and photos on internet. The subscribers are charged for the data charges and not for making calls. The telcos have highlighted that these apps are negatively impacting their revenues. So, they want the government to introduce certain norms and licensing fees for them.
An official from the regulatory body stated that, TRAI wants to understand impact and position of OTT services in present regulatory and business environment. The seminar will help in understanding issues around OTT services.
