Vodafone & Hyundai Robotics to Deploy Service Robots
Vodafone's 5G, artificial intelligence, and big data technologies will be applied to Hyundai Robotics' service robot hardware and autonomous driving software.
Vodafone has joined forces with Hyundai Robotics to develop service robots targeting European clients.
They would test-run quarantine robots at university hospitals in Germany before supplying 5G-based service robots to restaurants, hotels, and nursing facilities.
“We will try to promote the development of the European service robot field and lead the market by combining Hyundai Robotics’ service robot and 5G communication technology,” Seo Kyung-suk, Head of Hyundai Robotics’ service robot division, said in a statement.
Hyundai Robotics said it has signed a letter of intent with Vodafone at a trade fair in Hanover, Germany, to cooperate on the joint development and marketing of service robots based on 5G and 6G mobile communications technology.

Because service robots collect environmental data through cameras and sensors, high-speed communication technology is essential for rapid information processing.
Based on Vodafone’s 5G communication infrastructure, Hyundai Robotics would upgrade its system that simultaneously controls multiple robots and enables real-time data exchange between robots for their efficient team-level cooperation without human intervention.
The establishment of 5G networks in South Korea triggered a flurry of business cooperation in various industrial sectors, especially in robots and smart factories.
In June 2020, Hyundai Robotics tied up with KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, to develop service robots that are used in hotels and restaurants.
