While we continue to provide 24×7 technical support, we are also building an FAQ database so we can let engineers teach engineers from around the world. We encourage them to utilize our Technical Forum to find answers, share, and even teach, explains Tony Ng, Vice President, Global Sales, Digi-Key to Niloy Banerjee from BISinfotech. Tony also bears his views on Indian electronic distribution market and how is Digi-Key positioning as a company in this growing indigenous market. Edited Nub.
- What according to you (key trends) is driving the current electronic component distribution market?
TN: The new generation of Intel CPUs are creating new demands on laptops, desktops, and even servers. Implementation of 5G infrastructure has started and it will be followed by 5G handsets/tablets and all 5G enabled industrial/commercial applications. Electronic vehicles are also steadily driving demands.
- Today, customers’ are demanding and seeking a huge amount of technical service and support, how does your company ascertain the evolving customer demands?
TN: Yes, we continue to see engineering inquiries from components selection, application of an IC, reference solutions, and even component testing. As an eCommerce leader in the electronics distribution industry, we continue to support (and drive from a certain point of view) the digital transformation of technical services. While we continue to provide 24×7 technical support, we are also building an FAQ database so we can let engineers teach engineers from around the world. We encourage them to utilize our Technical Forum (https://forum.digikey.com/) to find answers, share, and even teach.
- How has e-kart or online business impacted the distribution market?
TN: Overall, it reduces the time to market (component selection, design, prototype build, and HMLV production needs) and enables the ever-reducing product life cycle. It speeds up the product promotion of large & small component manufacturers who are focusing on technologies and new product development. Contents, inventory availability, ease of purchase, and consolidated global shipment solutions are becoming more and more important.
4. What has been the key impact of globalization in the electronic distributor industry and how it has changed sales, service and logistics and way of doing business?
TN: Product life cycle gets reduced and new products are launched more frequently than ever. Manufacturers run into a shorter window to get their ROIs. All these make it more important to have the right selection of components at the right quantity when needed. The addition of courier shipment solutions is also needed on top of the large volume forwarding solutions.
5. What are your strategies of expansion and reach to the last mile of every major region?
TN: Digi-Key has been working with our courier partners on innovative solutions to the last mile delivery to each major market of the world. We continuously drive down that delivery cycle time. In some key markets, we will also be aggressive to have the proper business set up in order to enable that last-mile delivery.
6. Lastly, how do you see India as a market?
TN: Yes, India is a high potential market for our industry. In the short/mid-term, its export business will be positively impacted by the US-China tariff dispute. In the long term, its increasing scale of innovation and demands of product/services will become a driving engine for our industry.
