What is Smart Homes – Challenges, Scopes and Future!

smart-homeSince the beginning of time, once humans have started to evolve, they have always worked towards how to make things easier for themselves. This thought process has led us through the invention of wheels, light as well as many inventions we have seen so far.

The desire of humans to make a process simpler for them to use or work on has always driven them towards discovering new avenues. Smart Home Automation is one such desire that has been developed over time to make people’s lives easier.

Everyone must be familiar with the ad of Alexa commanded to play a song or control lighting of the room simply through a voice command. So how is Alexa doing everything with just a voice command, that’s a part of Smart Homes? It is through Smart Home automation where Alexa works as a smart-home controller so that it can recognize and work with multiple devices from multiple manufacturers.

But before coming to our main topic i.e. Smart Homes; let’s discuss some of the basic terminology used in smart home automation.

Wireless Network: In Smart Homes, this term can be generally defined as those computer networks that make use of Radio Frequency (RF) connections between nodes in the network.

Wireless Networks allow devices to be connected to the network while roaming around within the network coverage.

Internet of Things (IoT): We can best describe IoT as the rapidly growing network of connected objects that can collect and exchange data in real-time using embedded sensors and smart homes applications is certainly wooing this technology.

Home Automation: This word can be understood clearly after breaking it into two parts i.e., Home + Automation. Here, automation is simply a technology to remote control any device or machine through wireless networks. And if we add “Home” to this word, we can best define this as using technology to automate or remotely control various household functions wirelessly. The jargon is also called as Smart Homes.

Defining Smart Home Automation

Whenever we talk about smart homes, what’s the first thing that strikes your mind, a fully remote-controlled home that works according to your will and is controlled with just a simple click or voice command.

Smart homeThat is exactly what sums up the smart home as it can be referred to as a residence that uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems like lighting and heating.

With smart home automation, devices can trigger one another so you don’t have to control them manually via an app or voice assistant. Like for example, you can put your lights on scheduled times so that they turn off when you normally go to sleep, or you can have your A/C up about an hour before you return to work so you don’t have to return to a cramped and airless house.

How Does Home Automation Works?

Smart Home automation performs via a network of devices that are connected to the Internet through different communication protocols, i.e., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and others.

Through electronic interfaces, the devices can be deployed remotely through controllers, either via a voice assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant. Many of these IoT devices are equipped with sensors that monitor changes in motion, temperature and light so the user can gain information about the device’s surroundings.

Let’s take an example, if you are downstairs resting after a long day, and want to make sure your bedroom light is turned off for the night at a specific time. Wouldn’t it be great to do this via wireless control instead of having to go back upstairs? That’s a perfect example of wireless home automation.

Perks of Home Automation

  • Remote access: One can access control devices remotely like unlocking the door for delivery without having to leave a key under the mat.
  • Comfort: Everyone must be quite familiar with this experience of remembering to switch off the bathroom light after lying in bed all comfortably. With smart light bulbs, we can turn them off from the comfort of the bed without having to leave the bed.
  • Energy efficiency: How many times have we realize all too late that we had left the AC ON while we are out of the house for eight hours? With home automation, we can set things like AC on schedules to make sure we are not wasting energy.
  • Safety: Many smart security products in the market can increase our home’s safety, like sensors for doors and windows, security cameras that can detect people, and video doorbells that let us know whoever’s knocking from anywhere with the help of the Internet.

Costs: Though automating one’s home has many benefits but IoT devices are certainly more expensive than their non-WiFi-connected counterparts. And so home automation is a costly affair.

New technology: IoT being a relatively new technology, people might have issues while handling it and may also run into some bugs, like devices having trouble connecting to the Internet or experiencing lag time, depending on the device’s model.
